West Howe Industrial Estate – External Fire Escape & Access Improvements

Overview

Spire Contracts Ltd was appointed as Principal Contractor to deliver critical safety upgrades at West Howe Industrial Estate in Bournemouth. The project involved the installation of external fire escape systems, galvanised walkways, and access steps to improve emergency egress and enhance site accessibility for occupiers and visitors. The works were delivered in a live industrial environment, requiring careful coordination with tenants and stakeholders to minimise disruption and ensure safety throughout the programme.

Scope of Works Delivered by Spire Contracts Ltd:

Spire’s in-house construction and civils team carried out the following package of works:

Groundworks Preparation

Excavation and clearance of designated walkway areas
Sub-base preparation with compacted stone for structural integrity

Fabrication & Installation

Design, manufacture, and installation of galvanised steel walkways
Installation of steel access steps and handrails in accordance with current building regulations and fire safety standards

Fire Escape Structure

Construction of a new external fire escape staircase
Installation of piled foundations to support structural loads and ensure long-term stability
All steel components hot-dip galvanised for durability and corrosion resistance

Project Challenges & Achievements:

Live Site Coordination:

Works were delivered without disruption to the operational industrial estate, requiring phased working and effective stakeholder communication.

Health & Safety:

All works were delivered in accordance with CDM regulations. Temporary access and egress routes were maintained at all times to ensure the safety of site users.

Design Collaboration:

Close liaison with the project manager and structural engineers ensured design intent was fully met while maintaining programme and budget compliance.
